In a significant move to bolster its ‘Beyond The Return’ initiative, Ghana has announced a 46-day visa-on-arrival window for visitors, spanning from December 1, 2023, to January 15, 2024. This initiative is part of the Ghanaian government’s ambitious 10-year campaign, aimed at encouraging people of African descent, particularly those in the diaspora, to rediscover and reconnect with the nation.

Aligned with the broader objective of positioning Ghana as a premier destination for individuals with African roots, the visa-on-arrival provision seeks to facilitate travel and foster stronger ties with the diaspora community.
The Ministry of Transport has underscored the need to update systems promptly to accommodate this new arrangement. Furthermore, authorities responsible for passenger check-ins have been urged not to insist on entry visas before boarding, streamlining the travel process for those taking advantage of this opportunity.
Foreign Affairs Minister Ayorkor Botchwey hinted at Ghana’s consideration of allowing all Africans and people of African descent in the diaspora to enter the country visa-free. Currently, only a few African nations, including Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin, offer visa-free entry for all African citizens.
The decision to implement visa-free entry aligns with Ghana’s broader efforts to strengthen connections with the diaspora and establish itself as a welcoming and accessible hub.
