Grey Adds Four Currencies as Cross-Border Payments Expand

Y Combinator-backed fintech Grey has added the Argentine peso, Chilean peso, Thai baht and Ethiopian birr to its payout network, expanding local-currency access across more than 55 countries.

Cross-border payments platform Grey has expanded its international payout network with four new currencies, allowing users in Argentina, Chile, Thailand and Ethiopia to receive international payments in their local currencies.

The newly supported currencies are the Argentine peso (ARS), Chilean peso (CLP), Thai baht (THB) and Ethiopian birr (ETB). The expansion comes as freelancers, remote workers, entrepreneurs, exporters and businesses increasingly depend on international income while requiring easier access to local financial systems.

Grey said the expansion responds directly to demand from its growing customer base. The company described the launch as part of its broader goal of reducing barriers for people and businesses participating in the global economy.

Ethiopia represents a particularly significant addition for the African market. With a population exceeding 130 million and a rapidly developing digital economy, the country has seen strong growth in mobile financial services. Grey’s Ethiopian Birr payout option is designed to give users a more direct way to receive international income in their local currency.

The company said Ethiopia’s expanding community of freelancers, exporters, small businesses and diaspora-linked enterprises has increased demand for reliable international payment infrastructure.

In Latin America, the addition of the Argentine and Chilean pesos strengthens Grey’s offering for freelancers, remote professionals, startups and businesses operating across borders. Users can receive international earnings while connecting those funds more easily to their domestic financial needs.

Thailand brings another dimension to Grey’s expansion, particularly as the country remains an important destination for international travellers, creators, remote workers and digital nomads. Local-currency payouts can help users manage everyday expenses and payments while living or working in Thailand.

Grey began as an international payments platform in 2020 and has since expanded its services as users increasingly work and operate across multiple countries. The company now offers multi-currency accounts supporting US dollars, British pounds and euros, in addition to its expanding local payout network.

Grey said it currently serves close to three million users, supports payouts across more than 55 countries and enables transfers to more than 170 destinations worldwide. The platform also offers virtual cards for international spending.

The company’s expansion reflects the growing demand for financial services that can accommodate increasingly international lifestyles and business models. Freelancers can work for clients abroad, companies can operate across multiple markets and families can receive international funds without relying exclusively on traditional cross-border banking channels.

Grey’s CEO and Co-founder Idorenyin Obong said customer feedback has played an important role in determining which markets the company enters, describing the new payout options as a response to repeated requests from users and prospective customers.

The fintech is regulated as a Money Services Business under FINTRAC in Canada and FinCEN in the United States, according to the company. With the four new currencies, Grey is positioning its platform to serve a broader international customer base while expanding access to localized financial services for people earning, sending and spending money across borders.
