Women Rising: Resilience and Leadership in Displacement

UN Women, in collaboration with local partners and other UN agencies, is actively engaged in enhancing the well-being of displaced women worldwide. The organization, working alongside UNHCR and others, focuses on gender-inclusive programs that empower women’s leadership and self-reliance in displacement situations.

At the recent Global Refugee Forum in Geneva, UN Women committed to implementing pledges for women’s protection, leadership, and socio-economic inclusion. This commitment is exemplified through impactful stories from displaced women, showcasing their resilience and determination.

Taghreed, a Syrian refugee in Jordan, found support at UN Women’s Oasis Centre, participating in a cash-for-work program. After completing the courses, she established her tailoring business, enabling her to fund her daughter’s university education.

In Bangladesh, Pori, a Rohingya refugee, benefited from the Multi-Purpose Women’s Centre, addressing trauma, gaining literacy skills, and becoming an advocate against gender-based violence. Pori’s journey highlights the transformative power of education and empowerment.

Margaret, a South Sudanese widow in Uganda, overcame trauma through a mental health program by UN Women. Subsequently, leadership skills training empowered her to mobilize women in her community, leading to her election as the head of the refugee settlement.

These stories underscore UN Women’s commitment to creating positive impacts in the lives of displaced women, fostering resilience, and promoting gender equality in challenging circumstances.
