Equatorial Guinea has already registered 3,071 positive cases of coronavirus since the detection of the first case on March 14, 2020, among them, 842 patients have recovered from the disease and 51 patients have died. The data was confirmed this afternoon, July 2, by the responsible for statistics from the technical committee for surveillance and response to the Covid-19 pandemic in Equatorial Guinea.
After its first phase of de-escalation, the Technical Committee launched a massive test campaign on June 15, in order to find out the epidemiological state of the country, as of today 2,547 tests have been carried out in the capital city, 243 cases were confirmed.
In response to COVID-19, countries around the world have put in place a range of public health and social measures, which are actions by individuals, institutions, communities, local and national governments, and international bodies, to suppress or stop community spread of COVID-19.
Equatorial Guinea took action very early on. With just a few reported cases, country shut down airports, closed schools and all citizens have been told to stay home.
Two months earlier, a WHO report estimate predicted up to 10 thousand infections in the country. The Malabo surveillance committee ensures that the measures of confinement and social distancing have been effective in that fight. Therefore, “the massive testing has shown us that the population is aware of the pandemic,” says Dr. Diosdado Vicente Nsue.
