Lilongwe: Bidvest sale surprises Malawi stars

The sale of South African club Bidvest Wits, has shocked some of Malawian players who played for the club.

Wits have always been connected to Malawi football after providing platform to different players and most recently Frank Gabadihno Mhango (now with Orlando Pirates), Robin Ngalande (unattached) and Gerald Phiri Junior (now with Baroka FC).

In reaction Sunday, Ngalande said he was surprised with the news.

“I was very surprised when I read and I did not believe it. But anyway life is changing, maybe it is a new set up for the team and we will see how it will go,” he said.

Ngalande joined Wits on a two-year loan deal from Atletico Madrid and the deal was made permanent before he moved to Ajax Cape Town FC. He also played for Platinum Stars alongside Robert Ng’ambi.

On his part Phiri Junior said he was not ready to comment on Wits sale.

However, Mhango was not readily available Sunday.

Former Flames stars Ernest Mtawali and Chancy Gondwe also had stints with Wits during their playing days.

Gondwe said he enjoyed his time at Wits.

“I had great time playing for Wits. Its news that the club has been sold but I hope it is step in the right direction,” said Gondwe who also played for Mamelodi Sundowns.

At Wits, Mhango, having established himself under Gavin Hunt, won his first ever PSL title in 2016/17 season and also won the MTN Top 8 Cup in 2018. He was sold to Pirates before the start of the current season.

Currently, Wits have no Malawian players and are sixth on the log table with 38 points, 10 behind leaders Kaizer Chiefs.
