According to the statement, the enforcement of the new regulations will now take off from August 27, 2020 instead August 20 initially announced by the government.

  1. Evacuation: 327 Nigerians depart London for Abuja

Total of 327 stranded Nigerians successfully evacuated by the Federal Government have departed Gatwick Airport, London, and are expected to arrive at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms Sarah Sanda, disclosed this to journalists on Sunday in Abuja.

Sanda said the returnees departed London at 11.15 a.m. aboard Air Peace airline.

  1. We’ll persuade Buhari to sack service chiefs- senate

The Senate has said it will persuade the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), to sack the military chiefs, comprising the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Air Staff, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Naval Staff.

The upper chamber had, on July 21, asked the CDS and the service chiefs to step aside, following the killing of soldiers fighting insurgency and banditry in some parts of northern Nigeria.

The decision came after a motion moved during plenary via a point of order by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Army, Senator Ali Ndume.

  1. Reps grill CAC, NERC, others, decry MDAs’ low revenue remittances

The House of Representatives on Friday grilled heads of ministries, departments and agencies of the Federal Government, decrying that several of them under-remitted their revenues to the Federation Account.

The MDAs were grilled at the second day of the five-day interactive session on the 2021-2023 Medium Term Expenditure

They include Corporate Affairs Commission, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, National Hospital Abuja, National Electric Regulatory Commission, among others.

  1. ASUU rejects alleged takeover of institute by Kano Govt

Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kano State University of Science and Technology has urged the state government not to take over its Hospitality and Tourism Institute, Daula.

In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the Union, Muhammad Sani-Gaya and Murtala Muhammad respectively, it said that the action would be inimical to educational development of the state.

“ASUU expresses dismay on the Kano State Government decision regarding the taking over of the Hospitality and Tourism Institute (former Daula Hotel), contained in a letter dated Friday Nov. 15, 2019.

  1. Don tasks FG on infrastructure as unemployment rises to 27.1%

Nigeria’s unemployment rate rose to 27.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2020 from the 23.1 per cent recorded in Q3 2018.

The National Bureau of Statistics disclosed this, in its ‘Labor Force Statistics: Unemployment and Underemployment Report’ released on Friday.

In the report, it said underemployment rate increased from 20.1 per cent in Q3 2018 to 28.6 per cent in Q2 2020.

  1. Asset sale: Shell rejects Rivers court judgement

Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria has said it is very disappointed that the Rivers State High Court affirmed the enforcement of the purported sale of interests in SPDC JV’s assets in Kidney Island and specified interests in Oil Mining Lease 11 to the Rivers State Government.

The SPDC expressed its disappointment on Friday in a statement entitled ‘Shell appeals asset sale judgment’.

It said it had therefore filed an appeal and an application for a stay of execution of the recent judgment issued by the Rivers State High Court on August 13

  1. Lagos reaches COVID-19 peak, decries shortage of health personnel

The Lagos State Government on Friday said its current data showed that the state had reached the peak of its COVID-19 infections and the virus may “no longer be finding vulnerable people to infect.”

The state government, however, said this peak called for continuous safe health practices as it monitored the situation, noting that the shortage of health personnel, weak health and education systems were some of the challenges being faced in the fight against the pandemic.
