Kenya is strengthening its digital talent pipeline after 330 young people in Keiyo South completed a practical digital skills programme delivered through the Huawei DigiTruck, giving participants new tools to engage with the country’s expanding technology-driven economy.

The graduates were recognised during a ceremony in Nyaru, Keiyo South, attended by Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator William Kisang, Huawei representative Adam Lane and Keiyo South Member of Parliament Gideon Kimaiyo.

John Kipchumba Tanui, Principal Secretary in Kenya’s State Department of ICT and Digital Economy, said the programme demonstrates the importance of combining expanding digital connectivity with the skills citizens need to participate effectively in the digital economy.

The training was delivered through Huawei’s solar-powered DigiTruck, a mobile digital learning facility designed to take technology education directly into communities. By bringing training closer to young people, the programme creates opportunities for practical learning in areas where access to conventional digital training facilities may be more limited.

Tanui encouraged the graduates to build on their newly acquired skills by sharing their knowledge with others, pursuing more advanced digital capabilities and using technology to create opportunities. He urged the young participants to become active contributors to Kenya’s digital transformation rather than simply consumers of digital services.

The programme forms part of wider efforts to expand digital inclusion across Kenya as the government develops the National Digital Superhighway and continues investing in last-mile fibre infrastructure. The combination of connectivity and digital skills is expected to give more Kenyans the ability to access education, entrepreneurship, employment and other opportunities emerging from the digital economy.

Tanui also recognised Huawei Technologies, through its TECH4ALL initiative, and Computers for Schools Kenya for their partnership in delivering the training. The collaboration highlights the role of public institutions, technology companies and local organisations in expanding access to digital education.

The ceremony also featured the recognition of winners of the DigiTruck Innovation Competition, highlighting the creativity and problem-solving abilities developed through the programme. Representatives from the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner, Konza Technopolis and the ICT Authority, together with other government officials, attended the event.

For the 330 graduates, completing the programme marks the beginning of a new stage in their digital journey. As Kenya continues to expand its digital infrastructure and technology ecosystem, the skills developed through initiatives such as DigiTruck can help more young people participate in and contribute to the country’s growing digital economy.

Kenya’s investment in both connectivity and human capacity reflects a broader digital transformation across Africa, where equipping young people with practical technology skills is becoming increasingly important to unlocking entrepreneurship, innovation and new economic opportunities.
