A transformative project is empowering women in several African communities by providing them with new skills and tools in the nut industry. Through training and specialized equipment, the project has improved working conditions and production capacity for women, creating new economic and social opportunities in the region.
Yacoubou Safa, one of the beneficiaries, highlights the progress made thanks to the support. While finding almonds remains a challenge, the project has helped increase their capacity to collect and process shea nuts, a crucial regional product. “We asked the project to help us buy almonds. We can collect and process a lot of shea nuts, but almonds are difficult to find,” she explains.
Madagascar: That’s how it is the rural economy is transforming
The project’s real impact is seen in the economic empowerment of women. With intensive training and advanced machinery, they have increased productivity, improved product quality, and accessed a broader market. “Before this project, processing was manual, which took a lot of time. Now, with the machines, our work is more efficient and products are of better quality,” says Aissatou, another participant.
The project has also ensured a safer work environment by providing protective gear like gloves and boots, allowing women to work more safely and confidently. These improvements foster a healthier and more professional atmosphere. “Before, we worked without protection, which was risky. Now, we have everything we need to work more safely,” adds Mariam.
Despite these advances, challenges remain in infrastructure and resources. Yacoubou Bio Kourô, another participant, mentions the need for more robust infrastructure to continue growing. “We need a pump, an additional pipe for better oil clarity, better visibility for sales, a larger building, and electricity,” she says, reflecting the logistical barriers still limiting growth.
The project has created a space for economic development and a support network among the women, allowing them to share knowledge and resources. “The best thing is not only learning new skills but also forming a community of women entrepreneurs who support each other,” concludes Mariam. With continued support, these women can transform their region, fostering a more prosperous future.
