Namibia has taken a significant step towards advancing sustainable energy with the official launch of the inaugural Global African Hydrogen Summit (GAh2S) under its COP28 program.

The Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB), in collaboration with partners such as the Environmental Investment Fund of Namibia (EIF), DMG events, and Vasco Da Gama Energy, unveiled the event scheduled for September 3-5, 2024, in Windhoek.
Themed “From Ambition to Action: Fuelling Africa’s Green Industrial Revolution,” the three-day summit aims to gather global leaders, government agencies, industry experts, investors, and technologists to drive investments into bankable green energy projects. The focus will span hydrogen, renewables, power, infrastructure, transportation, and mobility sectors.
Honourable Tom Alweendo, Namibia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, officiated the launch, emphasizing the urgent need to transition to clean and sustainable energy sources. Alweendo highlighted Namibia’s commitment to becoming the sustainable energy capital of Africa, positioning itself through the development of green and blue economic growth

The GAh2S presents a unique platform for African governments, investors, financiers, scholars, and the public to unlock opportunities for the continent. It will also facilitate global players in the hydrogen value chain to showcase projects, plans, and technologies to Africa.
The summit will address Africa’s potential role in the global hydrogen market, fostering collaboration and dialogue across policy, investment, and the emerging hydrogen value chain. With an expected attendance of 2,000+ participants, including heads of state, ministers, and industry experts, the event aims to contribute to Africa’s industrialization, promoting green manufactured products and sustainable economic growth.
Namibia’s strategic focus on clean hydrogen production leverages its abundant solar and wind energy resources, making it a key player in the green hydrogen market. The country is actively engaged in research and development partnerships, recently announcing a US$10 billion green hydrogen project in collaboration with Hyphen Hydrogen Energy.
