Kenya Champions Responsible Military AI to Shape Global Security

The country is advancing international cooperation on military artificial intelligence ahead of the REAIM Summit 2027, scheduled to take place in Nairobi on 14–15 April.

Kenya is strengthening its engagement in international discussions on the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the military domain, advocating for approaches that balance technological advancement with human oversight, accountability and international peace and security.

As AI increasingly influences modern warfare and defence capabilities, questions surrounding its ethical use, governance and potential security risks have become central to international discussions. Kenya is contributing to these efforts through diplomatic engagement, multilateral cooperation and strategic partnerships focused on ensuring that emerging technologies are integrated into military operations responsibly.

In this context, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kenya to the United Nations in New York, on behalf of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), hosted a high-level side event on the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Military Domain (REAIM). The event was organised in collaboration with the Republic of Korea and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The meeting brought together international stakeholders to examine the opportunities and challenges associated with military AI, including the ethical, operational and governance questions arising from its growing application in defence. Discussions emphasised the importance of maintaining meaningful human oversight, ensuring accountability in military decision-making and strengthening international cooperation as AI technologies continue to evolve.

The engagement also highlighted the need for shared approaches to managing the risks associated with military AI while recognising its potential to influence future military capabilities. As countries explore new applications of emerging technologies, international dialogue remains essential to establishing responsible practices and addressing security concerns that extend beyond national borders.

The Nairobi engagement serves as a precursor to the REAIM Summit 2027, scheduled for 14–15 April 2027 in Kenya’s capital. The summit is expected to bring together international stakeholders for further discussions on governance, cooperation and the responsible application of artificial intelligence in the military domain.

Kenya’s role in convening these discussions places the country at the centre of an ongoing international dialogue on emerging defence technologies and their implications for global security. Through partnerships with other governments and participation in multilateral forums, Kenya is seeking to advance approaches that allow technological innovation to support military effectiveness without diminishing human responsibility or accountability.

The upcoming summit in Nairobi will provide another opportunity for participating countries and stakeholders to exchange perspectives, strengthen partnerships and explore common principles for the responsible development and use of military AI.

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape the global security environment, the challenge for governments will be to reconcile technological progress with the protection of human agency, adherence to international obligations and the pursuit of lasting peace and security.
