Ghana and India have reaffirmed their longstanding relationship and shared commitment to advancing the interests of the Global South, following the first official visit to Ghana by India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, on October 6, 2026.

During the visit, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, highlighted the historical ties between the two countries, linking their partnership to the legacies of Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, and India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Both leaders played prominent roles in shaping their countries’ post-independence identities and advocating greater autonomy for developing nations.

Ablakwa noted that Ghana and India shared a commitment to independence, self-reliance, dignity and strategic autonomy. He also emphasized that the two countries faced comparable development challenges, creating opportunities to combine their experiences and expertise to address common priorities.

The discussions highlighted the potential for deeper cooperation in areas that directly affect economic growth and social development. By exchanging knowledge, sharing practical experience and building on existing initiatives, both countries could strengthen their approaches to development and expand opportunities for their populations.

Dr. Jaishankar, meanwhile, drew attention to similarities between Ghana’s Accra Reset, Feed Ghana and One Million Coders initiatives and India’s programmes in healthcare, food security, digital transformation and entrepreneurship. He noted that these parallels offered opportunities for knowledge-sharing and cooperation.

The comparison reflects shared interests in strengthening food systems, improving access to healthcare, developing digital skills and supporting entrepreneurship. Cooperation in these areas could help both countries exchange lessons from their respective development programmes and explore approaches suited to their national priorities.

The visit also reinforced the broader significance of Ghana-India relations within the Global South, a term commonly used to describe developing countries seeking a stronger voice in international affairs and greater influence over the decisions that shape their economic and political futures.

Ghana and India have historical connections through their support for independence, self-determination and cooperation among developing nations. Their renewed engagement provides an opportunity to translate that shared legacy into practical collaboration on contemporary challenges, including economic transformation, technology and sustainable development.

While the visit highlighted areas of common interest, the extent to which these discussions will lead to new agreements and measurable outcomes will depend on the implementation of future cooperation initiatives. The renewed engagement underscores the continuing relevance of South-South cooperation, as countries across Africa and Asia seek to exchange expertise, strengthen economic resilience and pursue development strategies that reflect their own priorities.
