During the night of February 18-19, Sea Guard units from the Center, North and South regions managed to thwart 16 crossing operations and rescue 423 people. They are 71 Tunisians and 352 nationals of sub-Saharan African countries, according to a statement from the Guard spokesperson.

The Tunisian Coast Guard said on Friday that illegal migration had “experienced a sharp increase” in the past week due to “improving weather conditions”. Tunisian authorities will take necessary measures against the illegal immigrants, it noted.

Located in the central Mediterranean, Tunisia is one of the most popular transit points for illegal immigration to Europe, Xinhua news agency reported. Although Tunisian authorities have adopted rigorous measures to tackle the problem, illegal immigration attempts from Tunisia to Italy have been on the rise.
