Ghana is strengthening its digital education system by integrating certifications from the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP) into existing university degree and diploma programmes.
The initiative follows a partnership between the government and 11 leading universities, with Memoranda of Understanding signed to allow students to develop industry-relevant technology skills while completing their academic studies.
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations Samuel Nartey George announced the initiative during the Government Accountability Series at Jubilee House in Accra. He said the programme is designed to help close the gap between traditional academic education and the practical digital competencies increasingly demanded by employers.

Participating institutions include the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Ghana Communication Technology University and the University of Cape Coast.
Implementation has already begun at some universities. At KNUST, more than 1,000 students have enrolled in the One Million Coders Programme through four centres, including the Department of Computer Science and the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab.
Cybersecurity has recorded the highest OMCP enrolment, with 8,570 learners, followed by data analytics, AI Essentials, AI Professional and project management. The enrolment figures point to growing demand among Ghanaian learners for skills linked to the country’s expanding digital economy.
The government is also working with the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to introduce foundational digital skills training to students between 13 and 19 years old. The expansion is intended to expose young people to technology earlier in their education and broaden participation in the One Million Coders Programme.
By combining university qualifications with industry-focused certifications, Ghana aims to produce graduates who are better prepared for an increasingly technology-driven labour market while strengthening the country’s broader digital skills pipeline.
