The Director of GEPETROL, Antonio Oburu Ondo was  invited on Monday at the official opening of the 2020-2021 academic year of the University of Equatorial Guinea.

When asked by the media about the scholarships that his institution offers to Equatorial Guinean students, Oburu Ondo assured that Gepetrol continues to offer scholarships, a project that has been on for more than 15 years, but has indicated that the program has suffered a series of changes, in order to make it more efficient and make sure that the best students are the beneficiaries, not only to win them, but to stay in the program: “We currently give fewer scholarships because we are in a process of optimization, in such a way that it is not just any student who deserves these scholarships, but continues with the program ”, said the GD of Gepetrol.

The scholarship program for Equatorial Guinean students residing in the country includes professional training: sponsorship to study in national professional centers, university training, at the National University of Equatorial Guinea (UNGE) and the Afro-American University of Central Africa ( AAUCA), as well as Postgraduate training: for postgraduate studies in national and foreign training centers.

Antonio Oburu stated that during the year (2020-2021), no new scholarship awards were awarded: “ we are at the time of optimizing the program, which main objective is that the number of students in the program are really the best students, we do not accept new students during that course, what we do is eliminate those who cannot be in the program anymore because they do not have adequate performance, and reorganize the program a little, and start over later with the process of  granting of scholarships ”.

Although there are no new awards for the year, Oburu Ondo has stated that the scholarships are open to all students, whether they are from  GE or not and for all subjects, not only in oil matters, they are not only external, but for outside and within the country. He admitted that they have other types of agreements with the UNGE  that does not refer specifically to the issue of scholarships.

“GEPETROL has a  collaboration agreement with the UNGE, and we have made a specific agreement on the subject of internships, the company has been receiving UNGE students who want to do internship programs.  It is an agreement that has to be greatly strengthened and I understand can progress much more ”.

The advantages of these subsidies depend on the type of aid: “there are scholarships that cover from enrollment, maintenance, transportation, medical insurance, vacations to Guinea for those who are outside the country, it can cover all or part of your needs , the main advantage here is to be trained, to be a great person in the future ”. The Director of GEPETROL concluded.

Innovation and youth unite at Guinea Equatorial’s first major entrepreneurship forum The event highlighted the central role of youth as a driving force for innovation and growth, stressing the need to support them in transforming the national economy. For hours, the main hall of the Bisila Palace Hotel in Malabo buzzed with energy, creativity, and optimism. Dozens of young entrepreneurs, innovation experts, business leaders, and institutional representatives gathered to take part in the country’s first-ever World Entrepreneurship Day. The initiative, organized by the General Directorate of Youth, marked a turning point in national efforts to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem. From the opening remarks, the atmosphere was dynamic and engaging. Many of the participants — students, recent graduates, and emerging entrepreneurs — shared ideas, exchanged contacts, and benefited from the guidance of mentors and industry specialists. Workshops, hands-on sessions, and inspiring talks were among the highlights of the day. Among the key players was Dreams Hub, a leading innovation center dedicated to helping young people turn their ideas into reality. As its director put it: “We have created a space where young people can dream, create, and transform. Here, ideas don’t just emerge — they are nurtured and brought to life.” The day also served to strengthen alliances. Institutions such as INPYDE, KOIA HUB, IDENTIC Foundation, WOOMAX S.L, Ozuru Group, and Dance Street Boys reaffirmed their commitment to youth entrepreneurship, actively engaging in workshops, offering mentorship, and providing valuable resources and opportunities. Messages from authorities resonated strongly. Gabriel Mbaga Obiang Lima, President of the CAPS Partnership Committee, reminded participants that ideas outweigh initial funding: “The first step to becoming an entrepreneur isn’t money — it’s the idea. Young people are not the future; they are the present.” Meanwhile, the Director General of Youth encouraged participants to look beyond perfection: “What our young people need is to aspire to excellence. That’s why we are here — to support them, together with partners like Dreams Hub.” The event closed with a lively cocktail reception and a networking space where new connections were forged and existing ones strengthened. Cultural performances added a festive touch to a day that many described as the beginning of a new chapter for entrepreneurship in Guinea Equatorial. What became clear is that the ideas are there — and Equatoguinean youth are ready to drive change with creativity, innovation, and courage.
