Malawi: Cear takes safety tips to communities

Just a week after two women escaped a train death in Liwonde, the Central and East African Railway (Cear) has re-engaged the community around the area, sensitising them on safety measures.

The engagement brought together officials from Cear, chiefs and their subordinates.

Speaking during the engagement, Cear spokesperson, Chisomo Mwamadi, said it is sad that people would have been killed in the accident despite different interventions they have put in place.

He said the firm has put a flyover at Liwonde, constructed a fence to demarcate territories and is continuously engaging community members on safety measures.

“This area is a hotspot for us because it has a lot of traffic and in light of the video that went viral last week where two women were about to be hit by a locomotive, we thought it wise to come back and remind people of their responsibility in the prevention,” Mwamadi said.

One of the chiefs at the meeting, Senior Group Kaudzu, indicated that they will make sure that the message is delivered to the people.

He further asked Cear to consider putting safety signs in other places along the railway.
