More than 50,000 people across Kenya are set to benefit directly from a groundbreaking partnership between ATC Kenya and the Mawingu Foundation, aimed at providing free access to connectivity, digital literacy, vocational training, and essential health services in underserved rural and peri-urban areas. The project will be rolled out in secondary schools, vocational training centers, special education institutions, and dispensaries, with a clear goal of closing the digital divide that continues to affect many communities across the country.
Over the course of three years, the initiative will transform community spaces into digital hubs equipped with cutting-edge technology under the Digital Communities program led by American Tower. These hubs will enable both youth and adults to gain critical skills for employment, entrepreneurship, and access to digital healthcare and education services—contributing significantly to social and economic inclusion in vulnerable areas. “Bridging the digital divide must begin where the gap is widest—and that is in rural and peri-urban communities. This partnership allows us to bring meaningful and sustainable internet access to the people who need it most,” said Farouk Ramji, CEO of the Mawingu Foundation.

The strategy goes beyond infrastructure. It includes tailored educational content, modern equipment, and training programs aligned with local needs. This initiative aims to reduce inequalities and create real opportunities for youth, women, and historically marginalized populations. “At ATC Kenya, we believe connectivity is a powerful tool for transforming lives. Our mission is to ensure that no Kenyan is left behind in the digital revolution,” stated George Odenyo, CEO of ATC Kenya. “This collaboration with the Mawingu Foundation is a key step toward building a more connected, inclusive, and resilient Kenya.”
ATC’s Digital Communities model has proven to be an effective solution for driving local development through the strategic use of technology. Combined with the grassroots experience of the Mawingu Foundation, the partnership ensures a context-sensitive approach that prioritizes the institutions most in need.
The initiative is designed to have a structural impact on key sectors including education, employment training, community health, and youth empowerment. It is guided by a core principle: access to the internet and knowledge should not be a privilege—but a fundamental right. ATC Kenya, a subsidiary of American Tower Corporation—one of the world’s largest telecom infrastructure Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs)—operates over 4,200 telecommunications sites across the country, ensuring strong coverage to support the program’s implementation.
Meanwhile, the Mawingu Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Mawingu Networks Limited, has long been dedicated to expanding meaningful internet access and digital tools in underserved regions. Its community-driven approach has been instrumental in delivering sustainable, impact-driven solutions on the ground. With this partnership, Kenya reinforces its regional leadership in leveraging technology for inclusive development, proving that digital gaps can be bridged with vision, commitment, and transformative partnerships.
