As the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 79) convenes in New York, the African Development Bank (AfDB) is reaffirming its commitment to Africa’s sustainable development. With over 1.2 billion people looking to their leaders, the AfDB emphasizes critical issues such as climate change, global financial reform, peace, food security, and access to clean energy, aligned with the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

From September 22-30, the High-Level Segment will focus on “Leaving no one behind,” addressing challenges to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). AfDB President Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina will engage in high-stakes discussions, including a meeting with UN Secretary General António Guterres on increasing private sector involvement in Africa’s development.

Adesina will also participate in significant events, including a discussion titled “The World is at a Crossroads,” aimed at leveraging technological advances for a prosperous future. A key goal for the AfDB is to secure a $25 billion replenishment for its African Development Fund (ADF), which supports fragile economies.

Highlighting initiatives like the Desert to Power program, aimed at creating the largest solar energy zone and connecting 250 million people to electricity by 2030, Adesina is set to underscore the AfDB’s role in driving change.

Accompanied by top executives, Adesina will actively seek to strengthen partnerships and support for Africa’s development goals, starting with the action-oriented “Pact for the Future” at the Summit of the Future on September 22-23. Through these efforts, the AfDB aims to help Africa achieve up to 90% of its SDGs by 2030, reinforcing its position as a champion of the continent’s prosperity.
