Algeria Launches StartAlgeria to Strengthen Startup Support Ecosystem

Flat6Labs and IFC have launched StartAlgeria to strengthen organizations supporting early-stage startups, improve investment readiness and help Algerian entrepreneurs access capital and international markets.

Flat6Labs and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), in collaboration with Algeria’s Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Startups and Micro-Enterprises, have launched StartAlgeria, a new capacity-building programme designed to strengthen the organizations supporting the country’s startup ecosystem.

The initiative places Entrepreneur Support Organizations (ESOs) at the centre of Algeria’s efforts to build a stronger and more competitive entrepreneurship environment. The programme will provide organizations supporting pre-seed and seed-stage startups with international best practices, practical frameworks and networks to improve their services and create stronger connections between entrepreneurs, investors and other ecosystem stakeholders.

African Health Ministers Convene to Shape Region’s Health Priorities

StartAlgeria comes at a time when Algeria’s entrepreneurship ecosystem is expanding, supported by a growing community of founders and increased institutional attention to innovation and startups. The programme is designed to strengthen the organizations that work directly with entrepreneurs, helping them identify promising businesses and provide more effective support as those companies develop.

The first StartAlgeria cohort will focus on incubators in Algiers. Following a call for applications, selected ESOs will participate in workshops and masterclasses covering startup selection, programme design and delivery, and investment readiness.

Participants will also receive six months of post-programme mentorship, focusing on fundraising strategies, partnership development, financial sustainability and programme improvement. This extended support is intended to help participating organizations apply the knowledge gained during the programme to their own operations.

The expected impact extends beyond the participating organizations. By improving the capacity of ESOs to identify, mentor and prepare high-potential startups, StartAlgeria could help create a stronger pipeline of investment-ready companies. Better-equipped support organizations could enable more startups to access capital, improve their business models, establish international partnerships and expand into global markets.

The programme could also contribute to the broader development of Algeria’s private sector by strengthening the infrastructure around entrepreneurship rather than focusing only on individual companies. Stronger incubators and support organizations can provide entrepreneurs with more consistent access to expertise, networks, financing opportunities and market connections.

Flat6Labs CEO Yehia Houry said Algeria’s startup ecosystem is showing strong potential and increasing maturity, driven by a new generation of founders, institutional support and a national commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship.

Houry emphasized that empowering entrepreneurship support organizations would be important to helping the ecosystem translate this momentum into stronger startup pipelines, more effective programmes and better connections between entrepreneurs and sources of capital.

IFC also highlighted the importance of strengthening the organizations working directly with founders. Cemile Hacibeyoglu Ceren, World Bank Group Resident Representative in Algeria, said StartAlgeria is intended to equip ESOs with the tools, frameworks and expertise needed to help entrepreneurs move from early-stage ideas toward investment-ready ventures.

Algeria’s Minister of Knowledge Economy, Startups and Micro-Enterprises, H.E. Noureddine Ouadah, described the launch as an important step toward reinforcing the country’s startup support ecosystem and improving the long-term growth, resilience and international competitiveness of Algerian startups.

The programme is being implemented in partnership with the Government of the Netherlands, adding international development support to the initiative.

Flat6Labs, which operates across 15 countries in the Middle East and Africa, has supported more than 10,000 founders since its launch in Cairo in 2011. The organization works with governments, corporations, investors and other partners to develop startup programmes and strengthen entrepreneurship ecosystems.

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, focuses on private-sector development in emerging markets, using investment, expertise and partnerships to create markets and economic opportunities.

For Algeria, StartAlgeria represents an effort to strengthen the foundations of the country’s startup economy by investing in the organizations that help entrepreneurs build sustainable businesses.

If successful, the programme could improve the quality of startup support in Algeria, increase the number of companies prepared for investment and strengthen connections between local entrepreneurs and international sources of capital, expertise and markets. Over time, these improvements could contribute to innovation, private-sector growth and job creation.

The launch therefore represents more than a training programme for incubators. It is an investment in the wider infrastructure needed to help Algeria’s next generation of startups grow, attract investment and compete beyond the domestic market.
