For thousands of young people in Cabo Verde, a new government-led initiative is opening doors to global opportunities that extend far beyond the country’s shores.
The government has formally launched Skodji Digital, a national programme designed to equip young Cabo Verdeans with the skills, support and access needed to participate in the global digital economy. Led by Cabo Verde Digital, the initiative is being positioned as one of the most ambitious efforts yet to expand digital opportunity and economic inclusion in the country.

Skodji Digital aims to create 3,000 pathways for young people to earn, build and grow careers in digital work. The first phase of the programme, which has already begun, is offering 1,050 places and is open to Cabo Verdeans both at home and across the diaspora.
More than a training scheme, Skodji Digital is designed to translate skills into livelihoods. Participants will receive not only technical and digital training but also structured support to access the gig economy, secure international remote work and develop digital enterprises. Organisers say the focus is on enabling young people to generate sustainable income, rather than simply acquiring certificates.
The programme is funded by the World Bank through the Digital Cabo Verde Project and is being implemented by the government through the Ministry of Digital Economy, in collaboration with local and international partners. Officials say the initiative reflects a strategic shift toward positioning Cabo Verde as a source of competitive digital talent for global markets.
For a country with limited domestic job opportunities and a large, connected diaspora, digital work is increasingly seen as a way to expand economic choices for young people. By opening access to global platforms and remote employment, Skodji Digital aims to reduce barriers to opportunity and allow youth to compete internationally without leaving the country.
Government leaders say the initiative is part of a broader vision to empower young people, encourage entrepreneurship and build a more resilient, inclusive economy. By investing in digital skills and global access, Cabo Verde is seeking to ensure that its youth are not only prepared for the future of work but are active participants in shaping it.
Applications for the first phase of Skodji Digital are open until February 25, with participation available to eligible Cabo Verdeans living both in the country and abroad.
