Six African startups have been selected as winners of the 2026 FINCA Ventures Prize Competition, receiving a combined $400,000 in catalytic funding to expand businesses addressing financial inclusion, agriculture and food-system challenges across the continent.

The annual competition, now in its third year, received more than 700 applications from entrepreneurs developing solutions for underserved communities. The 2026 competition focused on two categories: fintech for financial inclusion and sustainable agriculture and food systems.

The first-place winners in each category received $100,000 grants, while second-place winners received $60,000 and third-place winners $40,000. The awards are designed to provide early-stage companies with capital to strengthen their operations, expand their reach and attract additional investment.

VunaPay, a Kenya-based fintech company co-founded by Gatwiri Njogu-Mokaya and Koya Matsuno, won first place in the financial inclusion category. The company develops payment and credit infrastructure for agricultural value chains, enabling cooperatives to provide faster payments to smallholder farmers while improving access to formal financial services.

VunaPay plans to use the funding to expand its platform across agricultural cooperatives. Co-founder Koya Matsuno said Africa has approximately 54,000 cooperatives, each representing hundreds or thousands of farmers, creating a potentially significant market for digital financial services designed around agricultural value chains.

Kenyan startup nesti took second place in the same category, receiving $60,000. Founded by Christabel Ojuok and David Kimani, the company converts rental payment histories into financial records that can help renters establish credit profiles and gain access to financing and homeownership opportunities.

ChatCash, operating in Rwanda and Zimbabwe, received the $40,000 third-place award. Founded by John Josiah Sakala, Leon Kanamugire, Edgar Erick and Jude Egbokwu, the company uses artificial intelligence to turn WhatsApp into digital storefronts for small merchants, incorporating payment functionality into conversations with customers.

The platform is designed to help informal and small businesses improve digital sales while creating transaction records that could eventually help merchants access financial services.

In the sustainable agriculture and food systems category, Kenya-based Kumbatia Seafood won the $100,000 first-place prize. The company, founded by Bernard Iha Thoya, Will Gertler and Nelson Ondego Mumata, works with small-scale fishing communities along Kenya’s Swahili Coast to source, finance and distribute sustainably caught fish.

Kumbatia Seafood combines financing, cold-chain logistics, export-grade processing and digital traceability to connect coastal fishing communities with higher-value markets. The company plans to use the prize money for working capital and expansion, including the development of a sales department and expansion into additional communities.

Zimbabwean startup eAgro received the $60,000 second-place award in the sustainable agriculture category. Founded by Tafadzwa Chikwereti and Golden Nhunhama, the company develops agricultural technology that can operate without an internet connection, allowing farmers in rural areas to access agricultural guidance through basic mobile phones.

Its technology combines artificial intelligence, satellite data, soil science and local agricultural advisory systems to help farmers improve yields, reduce losses and strengthen resilience to climate-related challenges.

Kenyan startup Pollen Patrollers received the $40,000 third-place award. Founded by Margaret Wanjiku, Julieta Wanjohi and Charity Maina, the company uses solar-powered Internet of Things technology and artificial intelligence to support pollination services for farmers and beekeepers.

The company aims to improve crop yields, reduce bee colony losses and strengthen food systems while creating green employment opportunities for women and young people.

Three of the six finalist companies are led or co-led by women, highlighting the growing participation of female entrepreneurs in Africa’s technology, financial services and sustainable agriculture sectors.

The finalists presented their businesses to a panel of judges in San Francisco on October 6 at an event hosted by Cisco, with the winners announced later that evening. The judging panel included representatives from impact investing, venture capital, fintech and sustainable development.

FINCA Global CEO Andrée Simon said early-stage support can help entrepreneurs demonstrate traction and credibility while positioning their companies to attract larger investments.

FINCA Ventures Managing Director Winnie Mwangi said catalytic capital can help startups reach a scale at which both financial returns and social impact can grow. She also emphasized the importance of investors and partners supporting businesses during their early growth stages.

The awards come as African startups continue to face challenges in accessing early-stage capital despite growing demand for technology-driven solutions in financial services, agriculture, commerce and other sectors. For many founders, access to relatively small amounts of early funding can determine whether a promising business is able to move from proof of concept to commercial expansion.

FINCA International Board Chair David Weisman said the competition was intended to give greater visibility to African entrepreneurs creating jobs and strengthening financial and social resilience.

The six winners reflect a broader trend across Africa in which startups are combining technology with locally focused business models to address gaps in access to finance, agricultural services, markets and digital infrastructure.

With $400,000 now committed across the six companies, the next stage will be translating the funding into expansion, additional jobs, stronger services and measurable impact in the communities they serve. The competition also demonstrates the role that catalytic capital can play in helping African startups move toward larger-scale investment and commercial sustainability.
