West Africa’s growing startup ecosystem has taken centre stage as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) hosts the second edition of its Startup Awards, bringing together entrepreneurs from across the region to showcase innovation and build pathways to regional markets.

Held in Abuja from September 28–30, the 2026 edition attracted 8,679 registrations from 12 ECOWAS Member States, with 1,499 applications qualifying for further consideration. Following an evaluation process supported by the International Trade Centre (ITC), 60 startups advanced to the final stage across six sectors: EdTech, FinTech, HealthTech, AgriTech and Food Systems, CleanTech and Green Innovation, and Tourism, Hospitality and TravelTech.

The awards are being held under the theme “Scaling West African Startups for Digital Transformation, Regional Integration and Sustainable Value Chain Ecosystem Development to Drive Market Access.” The initiative is led by the ECOWAS Commission’s Department of Economic Affairs and Agriculture, with a focus on connecting promising businesses with capital, technology, markets and partnerships that can support expansion across the region.

The awards ceremony on September 30 is set to recognise the top three startups with prizes of US$30,000, US$20,000 and US$15,000, respectively. The programme also includes investor deal rooms and a Ministerial High-Level Dialogue focused on MSMEs, industrial integration and trade development.

For the finalists, the opportunity extends beyond the competition itself. Before the awards, the entrepreneurs participated in a five-day intensive masterclass covering business validation, market access, regional expansion, investment readiness, fundraising, environmental, social and governance considerations, and pitching.

All 60 finalists will also receive access to a six-month acceleration programme, mentorship, investor engagement, regional visibility and post-event support. They will join the ECOWAS Startup Network and gain access to the ECOWAS Private Sector Development Academy.

Mr. Dehpue Yenpea Zuo, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, described the awards as part of the region’s broader effort to support economic transformation, youth employment, inclusion, industrialisation and regional integration.

The programme reflects an increasingly regional approach to entrepreneurship, where startups are being encouraged to look beyond individual national markets and build businesses capable of serving customers across West Africa and, ultimately, the wider African market.

Representing ITC Executive Director Pamela Coke-Hamilton, ITC National Coordinator for Nigeria Natasha Akioye highlighted the importance of giving promising businesses access not only to finance, but also to skills, networks and markets that can help them compete and expand across borders.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Industry at the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Senator John Owan Enoh, also highlighted the contribution of startups to the country’s economic development. He noted that Nigerian startups reportedly raised US$364.1 million in August 2026, while stressing that access to capital represents only one element of building sustainable enterprises.

According to the minister, businesses also need productive capacity, quality employment, market access, applicable standards and the ability to compete over the long term.

The ECOWAS Startup Awards consequently place entrepreneurship within a wider regional development agenda. From digital education and financial technology to agriculture, healthcare, clean technology and tourism, the finalists represent sectors with potential to address market needs while creating new opportunities for employment and investment.

With 8,679 registrations demonstrating the breadth of entrepreneurial interest, the 2026 awards offer a snapshot of a West African startup landscape increasingly focused on scaling, cross-border commerce and regional integration.

The initiative also reinforces ECOWAS’ efforts to create stronger connections between entrepreneurs, investors, institutions and markets, providing a platform through which locally developed businesses can pursue opportunities across the Community and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
