The Merck Foundation marked World Health Day 2026 by reaffirming its commitment to improving healthcare access through an extensive scholarship and capacity-building program targeting underserved regions.

Over the past 14 years, the foundation has awarded more than 2,600 scholarships to healthcare professionals from 52 countries, focusing on 44 critical and underserved medical specialties. The initiative aims to address one of the most pressing challenges facing many developing countries: the shortage of trained medical specialists.

According to the foundation, many scholarship recipients have gone on to become the first specialists in their fields within their home countries, helping to close longstanding gaps in healthcare systems. Countries such as Liberia, The Gambia, Malawi, Sierra Leone and Zambia are among those benefiting from the program.

Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, chief executive officer of the Merck Foundation, said the initiative is designed to transform patient care by strengthening local expertise. She emphasized that improving healthcare outcomes depends not only on funding but also on developing skilled professionals capable of diagnosing and managing diseases effectively.

Africa continues to face a disproportionate health burden, accounting for nearly a quarter of global diseases while having a limited healthcare workforce. This imbalance has contributed to reduced access to quality care in many communities, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

The foundation works in partnership with African and Asian First Ladies, as well as ministries of health and education, to identify candidates and ensure that training aligns with national healthcare priorities. In addition to medical training, the organization also promotes education and research through initiatives that support women and young professionals in science and technology.

As part of this year’s commemoration, the foundation announced a new call for applications for its 2026 scholarships. The program includes clinical fellowships, diploma courses and master’s degrees, with a particular focus on encouraging applications from women in the medical field.

By investing in human capital and strengthening healthcare capacity, the Merck Foundation aims to create lasting improvements in patient care and build more resilient health systems across Africa and beyond.
