Africa charts a new course with its youth at the forefront

This vision requires a deep restructuring of the continent's educational systems. According to N’Guessan, only technical, vocational, and digital training aligned with strategic sectors will unlock the full potential of Africa’s youth.

Africa stands at a critical yet hopeful crossroads. During the 2025 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank Group, held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, continental leaders converged around a central message: the present moment offers a unique opportunity to redirect Africa’s development trajectory. With bold public policies centered on youth empowerment, Africa can turn its structural challenges into engines of sustainable growth and stability.

Speaking at a panel on the second decade of implementation of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, Koffi N’Guessan, Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Vocational Training, reaffirmed the Agenda as the most ambitious blueprint for the continent’s future. Yet, he warned that the lack of quality employment for young people remains a significant obstacle. Youth, he stressed, must not be seen merely as vulnerable recipients of policy, but as transformative agents of economic progress.

This vision calls for a deep restructuring of Africa’s education systems. According to N’Guessan, only technical, vocational, and digital training aligned with strategic sectors will unlock the continent’s demographic dividend. Without aligning education to labor market needs, Africa risks squandering its youth potential and perpetuating inequality.

But transformation also hinges on committed financing. Hervé Lohouès, senior economist at the African Development Bank, emphasized that Africa’s natural resources, if properly valued, could fuel this shift. Economies like the Central African Republic’s could triple in size by integrating natural capital into GDP calculations. Properly managed, this wealth offers a powerful lever to implement mandatory development plans focused on youth well-being.

The key takeaway from Abidjan is clear: African leaders now face a historic responsibility—and opportunity—to reorient the continent’s future. Mobilizing human, financial, and natural resources in a coordinated way is not just necessary; it is urgent. Making youth employment the centerpiece of development is not optional—it is the path to building an Africa where young people not only work, but also lead, innovate, and thrive.
