The “Desert Foxes,” Algeria’s national football team, came seeking revenge against the Nzalang Nacional, Equatorial Guinea’s team, and emerged victorious despite a challenging first half for the squad. In their debut in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, the Algerians secured a 2-0 victory in a match played on September 5 in Oran. This game provided the perfect opportunity for Algeria to redeem themselves after the painful defeat they suffered at the hands of Equatorial Guinea in AFCON 2023.

Despite the visitors managing to hold off the Algerians for most of the first half, even stopping a penalty by Riyad Mahrez, Algeria remained persistent. The score stayed level until the 69th minute, when Houssem Aouar capitalized on a rebound following a Mahrez shot, breaking through Equatorial Guinea’s defense.
In added time, Amine Gouiri sealed the win with a second goal, consolidating Algeria’s dominance in the second half. With this victory, the Algerians take the lead in Group E and start their journey to the 2025 AFCON in Morocco on the right foot.
This result solidifies Algeria’s role as one of the favorites in the qualifiers, while Equatorial Guinea will need to focus on improving their offense ahead of their next match against Togo on September 9.
