Rocío Watson has been elected as the First Vice President of the Equatoguinean Football Federation (FEGUIFUT) during the 48th Ordinary General Assembly held on Saturday, August 24, 2024, in Djibloho. For many in the Equatoguinean football scene, this election “marks a radical change in the federation’s structure and symbolizes a crucial advancement in the country’s sport”.

Watson, who becomes the first woman to hold this high office, has been received with great enthusiasm by the football community. “A significant boost in the development of women’s football and greater inclusion at all levels of the sport is expected”, said a young football fan. This widespread support underscores the hope that her leadership will bring about a new era of equity and modernization.

Following her appointment, Watson described the role as “historic” and committed to working towards equality and professionalism. “This is a crucial step towards modernization in our football. I am determined to ensure that our women receive the recognition they deserve and to promote greater transparency within the federation”, said the former footballer turned executive.

The assembly also welcomed prominent former Cameroonian footballer Samuel Eto’o, current president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT). Eto’o praised the recent progress in Equatoguinean football and emphasized the importance of regional cooperation. “I have seen significant progress in Equatoguinean football and celebrate the ongoing reforms. Collaboration between federations is crucial for the growth of football in Africa”, Eto’o concluded.

Watson’s election, some footballers hope, “not only represents a significant change in FEGUIFUT but also lays the groundwork for a more inclusive and dynamic federation”.
