Gambia, a small country but full of potential, has demonstrated how strategic investment in infrastructure can catalyze progress and regional integration. The Senegambia Bridge, a monumental project funded by the African Development Fund (ADF), has transformed life in West Africa, connecting Gambia with its neighbor Senegal more efficiently and effectively. This bridge not only facilitates trade and transportation but also symbolizes Gambia’s commitment to development and shared prosperity in the region.

During a recent visit to Gambia, executives from the African Development Bank (AfDB) witnessed firsthand the positive impact of this project and other key developments in the country. Nomfundo Ngwenya, spokesperson for the AfDB mission, highlighted the symbolism of the bridge, stating, “This bridge is a symbol of what is possible when two countries come together to build shared prosperity.” The significance of this infrastructure goes beyond its functionality, as it represents Gambia’s efforts to advance its development process and solidify its position as a driver of regional growth.

The AfDB delegation also visited transformative projects in Gambia, such as the Women’s Garden in Bassori, which has empowered local farmers through irrigation training, funded by the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP). Another key example of progress is the OMVG 225/30 kV substation in Soma, which strengthens regional energy connectivity, and the energy access program in Ker Ali, which brings electricity to previously off-grid villages. These projects highlight Gambia’s focus on sustainable and accessible solutions that directly benefit local communities.

Chantal Nonault, another AfDB executive director, expressed, “This is what development looks like: local, practical, and community-owned. We’re not just reviewing numbers, we’re seeing the results of collaboration and joint effort.” Gambia has successfully implemented these projects with an inclusive approach that ensures the benefits are long-lasting and deeply embedded in the daily lives of its citizens.

President Adama Barrow also played a crucial role during the mission, highlighting his government’s progress in implementing the National Development Plan 2023-2027. This plan, focused on economic diversification, climate adaptation, and digital transformation, aligns closely with the priorities of the African Development Bank, solidifying Gambia as a key player in West Africa. Cooperation with the Bank, which began in 1974, has resulted in a strong project portfolio totaling $227.47 million, with a focus on transportation, energy, and agriculture.

At the conclusion of the visit, the AfDB executive directors expressed their deep admiration for the progress made in Gambia. “We leave with a clearer understanding of the achievements and renewed confidence in what more can be done,” they stated. This mission reaffirms Gambia as a model of progress, where infrastructure and regional cooperation are paving the way for a more prosperous and connected future for all.
