Crowds gathered in celebration, flags waved and a sense of anticipation filled the air as Pope Leo XIV arrived in Equatorial Guinea, marking a historic moment that has united the nation in faith, pride and optimism.

Touching down in Malabo from Angola, the pontiff was received with full state honors by government officials and religious leaders. The reception, marked by ceremony and enthusiasm, set the tone for a visit that has quickly become a moment of pride for the country’s predominantly Catholic population.

In the capital, anticipation had been building for days, with communities gathering to witness a rare and meaningful occasion. For many, the presence of the Pope represents not only a spiritual milestone but also a powerful affirmation of Equatorial Guinea’s identity as the only Spanish-speaking nation in Africa with a deeply rooted Catholic tradition.

Central to the visit is the inauguration of the Basupu University Campus, a project that symbolizes the country’s investment in education and the future of its youth. By associating his name with the institution, Pope Leo XIV underscores the importance of knowledge, opportunity and long-term development as pillars of national progress.

The pontiff’s agenda also includes a visit to the Sampaka Psychiatric Center, highlighting the importance of compassion, dignity and inclusion within the healthcare system. The visit draws attention to the need for continued support for vulnerable communities and reinforces the Church’s role in promoting human-centered care.

Beyond Malabo, the Pope’s journey extends to the mainland, beginning in Mongomo, where he will celebrate Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The ceremony is expected to gather large numbers of faithful, reflecting the deep connection between religion and daily life across the country.

The visit will continue in Bata, the nation’s economic hub, where Pope Leo XIV will meet with communities, visit key national sites and engage directly with citizens.

The final stage of the trip will bring the Pope back to Malabo, where a large public Mass is expected to draw thousands, serving as a powerful moment of unity and shared faith.

Throughout his stay, the Pope is delivering his messages in Spanish, creating an immediate and meaningful connection with the population. His words, centered on hope, solidarity and progress, resonate strongly with citizens who see the visit as both a spiritual blessing and a moment of national recognition.

Across the country, the atmosphere remains one of celebration. Communities have come together in joy, embracing a visit that highlights not only faith, but also the country’s place on the global stage. This marks only the second papal visit to Equatorial Guinea, following Pope John Paul II decades ago, and stands as a defining moment for a nation looking ahead with confidence and unity.
