Equatorial Guinea has been one of the first countries to formally express its interest in hosting the 2029 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo communicated this intention directly to Dr. Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), during his recent visit to the country. Additionally, the president of the Equatorial Guinea Football Federation (FEGUIFUT) also reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the bid.

Equatorial Guinea has previous experience in organizing this prestigious tournament, having co-hosted AFCON in 2012 with Gabon, and taking on the challenge of organizing the 2015 edition in record time after Morocco withdrew due to the Ebola threat. The success of those tournaments, along with its ambition to strengthen sports in the country, positions Equatorial Guinea as a strong contender for the 2029 edition.

However, the competition to host AFCON 2029 will not be easy. Ethiopia, during its 46th General Assembly, has also officially presented its bid. During the CAF assembly held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced his country’s intention to host the event. Ethiopia is no stranger to this tournament, having hosted it three times (1962, 1968, and 1976), and now aims to provide an exceptional experience for teams, fans, and the entire football community.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has also expressed interest in the bid. President Félix Tshisekedi stated, “My goal is to present the DRC’s candidacy for hosting AFCON 2029 on Congolese soil.” He explained that his country is already working to improve its infrastructure, particularly in stadiums and hotels, to be ready for the bid. Despite ongoing challenges, the DRC’s recent successful organization of the Francophonie Games strengthens its confidence in hosting large-scale sporting events.

With Morocco confirmed as the host for AFCON 2025 and a trio of East African countries (Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia) set to organize the 2027 edition, CAF has yet to open the official selection process for the 2029 edition. However, the early moves by Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, and the DRC highlight the growing competition among African nations to host this important continental tournament. CAF will evaluate the bids by considering factors such as the experience and infrastructure of the bidding countries.
