Malawi is strengthening efforts to expand digital connectivity beyond its urban centres, as the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) engages Huawei on technology solutions aimed at bringing reliable and affordable internet access to more rural communities.

The discussions focused on ways technology and collaboration can help address some of the infrastructure challenges limiting connectivity in underserved areas. Joshua William Kamanga, Fixed Network Solutions and Product Manager at Huawei, shared details of the engagement and highlighted solutions designed to make network deployment more affordable, scalable and accessible.

Among the technologies presented was Huawei’s Rural Link, a compact telecommunications site designed to integrate essential network components into a pole-based structure. The solution combines solar power, radio equipment, microwave and baseband technology, offering an approach that could help reduce deployment costs in smaller communities where conventional telecommunications infrastructure may be difficult to justify commercially.

For Malawi, solutions that can lower the cost of network deployment could provide an important opportunity to extend connectivity to communities that remain outside the reach of traditional infrastructure. Rural connectivity is particularly important as access to reliable internet increasingly supports education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, financial services and participation in the digital economy.

The engagement also highlighted the importance of affordable devices. Expanding network coverage alone does not guarantee digital inclusion if people cannot afford smartphones or other devices required to access online services. Huawei therefore pointed to the need for both accessible connectivity and affordable technology to ensure that more Malawians can benefit from digital opportunities.

As Malawi works to close its digital divide, cooperation between regulators, government, technology companies and telecommunications operators could play an important role in developing solutions suited to the country’s communities and infrastructure needs.

Huawei said it remains committed to working with the Malawian government, regulators, operators and other stakeholders to support Malawi’s digital transformation and extend the benefits of the digital economy to more communities.

For Malawi, the focus on rural connectivity represents more than expanding telecommunications infrastructure. It is an opportunity to connect more people to information, services, education and economic opportunities, helping ensure that the country’s digital future reaches communities across the country.
