The competition, spanning three days from November 23, witnessed fierce contests across 18 races for both men and women, encompassing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles categories. Eight qualification tickets for the Paris Olympics were at stake, intensifying the sporting battles and aspirations of the participating athletes.

Thomas Konietzko, the president of the International Canoe Federation, lauded Nigeria’s hosting efforts, emphasizing its pivotal role in providing a stage for Africa’s top athletes. He noted that venturing into new territories for such events is a significant step forward for the continent.

For the athletes, the stakes were high, and the challenges immense. He conveyed optimism about making his nation proud with proper coaching and training support.

Drevor Lespoir from Seychelles acknowledged the tough competition, stating, “It’s a little bit challenging because there are lots of the best athletes. I want to win, but only God knows my position on the water.”

In the end, triumph and Olympic tickets went to Angola, Tunisia, Nigeria, Morocco, Egypt, and South Africa. The event showcased not only the athletic prowess of the participants but also the growing interest and talent pool in canoeing across the continent.
