The Democratic Republic of the Congo has taken a significant step toward modernizing its higher education and research system with the launch of a new digital portal designed to centralize academic data and improve institutional governance.

The platform, dedicated to the Higher Education, University, Scientific Research and Innovation (ESURSI) sub-sector, is intended to serve as a secure, real-time system for managing academic information nationwide. Officials say it will help streamline operations across universities and research institutions while improving transparency and coordination.

The initiative, led by Higher Education Minister Marie-Thérèse Sombo, seeks to address long-standing structural challenges within the sector. These include fragmented information systems, limited access to academic and scientific resources, and persistent inequalities between urban and rural institutions.

For years, the country’s higher education system has been constrained by low levels of digitalization in public services, uneven broadband connectivity, and the limited integration of modern technology into academic and administrative processes. These gaps have slowed institutional efficiency and restricted access to knowledge.

The launch aligns with the broader digital transformation agenda promoted under Prime Minister Judith Suminwa, positioning the portal as a strategic tool for improving governance and enabling data-driven decision-making in the education sector.

At its core, the platform is designed to enhance the traceability of academic pathways, allowing institutions to monitor student progress more effectively. It also aims to expand access to learning and research materials, creating a more inclusive academic environment across the country.

In addition, the system will consolidate sector governance by providing reliable, centralized data, supporting better planning, budgeting, and policy implementation. Officials say this will foster a more integrated and efficient national higher education ecosystem.

The government has described the initiative as a foundational step toward building a more transparent, harmonized, and digitally enabled education and research environment. As the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to invest in digital infrastructure, the platform is expected to play a key role in shaping the future of higher education in the country.
