Journalism is one of the few feminized sectors in Spain, with women accounting for 58.4% of enrollments in the country’s universities, according to data from the Ministry of Education. However, this doesn’t seem to translate into women occupying executive positions. Just look at the main print and audiovisual media outlets in the country, where women in leadership positions are still exceptions.
In fact, the Madrid Press Association, in its latest Report on the Journalism Profession, estimates that only 24% of executive positions in Spanish media are held by women. In newsrooms, the figure is closer to parity, with 45% of positions held by women. Yet, there is still underrepresentation of women in news stories, with only 26% featuring women in print, radio, and television. These issues will be addressed at the event.
