Argentina: 14-year-old Ignacio Musumeci emerges as a handball talent to watch

At just 14 years old, Ignacio Musumeci is beginning to make a name for himself in Argentina’s youth handball scene, combining strong performances, determination and a growing list of achievements with Club Atlético Barrio Parque in Córdoba.

Musumeci plays in the Menores category and wears the number 60 jersey. His 2026 season has been particularly impressive, with the young player helping Barrio Parque win the Córdoba Apertura Tournament before going on to claim the Región Centro title.

The teenager also finished as Barrio Parque’s leading scorer and among the competition’s top scorers, performances that have earned him recognition beyond the club level. Barrio Parque carried its strong domestic form into the National Clubs Menores Phase 1 Región Centro tournament, held in Santa Fe from July 31 to August 2. The competition brought together teams from associations across Córdoba, Santa Fe, Rosario and San Nicolás.

The Córdoba side immediately showed its ambitions, opening its campaign with a commanding 41-13 victory over Almagro. Barrio Parque ultimately completed the tournament as men’s Región Centro champions.

Musumeci was an important part of that campaign, although the young player was quick to emphasize the contribution of his teammates rather than focus solely on his individual statistics.

“I feel proud because with this team we were able to achieve our objective in the Regional, give everything and take the necessary steps to reach where we had set out to go as a team,” Musumeci said in an interview with Radio 99.1. His performances have also opened another important door: the Córdoba provincial selection.

Musumeci was initially among six Barrio Parque players called into the Córdoba Menores pre-selection process. Following the different evaluation stages, three players from the club remain in contention: Musumeci, Facundo Fernández and Martín Elizalde.

For the young handball player, representing his province would be another major step in his development. “I feel very proud to have been called up by the Córdoba national team coach. Since I started my career, I have worked to improve myself and be able to represent my province and my country,” he said.

Córdoba is preparing for the Campeonato Argentino de Selecciones Menores “Prof. Alfredo Miri”, scheduled to take place in San Juan from September 7 to 12, 2026. The tournament will be organized by the Federación Sanjuanina de Balonmano and held under the authority of the Confederación Argentina de Handball.

Behind Musumeci’s development is a young coaching team led by Octavio Sarmiento, who, at 26, occupies a dual role at Barrio Parque. Sarmiento coaches the youth category while also continuing his own career as a player with the club’s first team. The coach believes the young players have significant potential and sees Musumeci competing at a high level within Córdoba.

Sarmiento said his objective goes beyond winning championships, emphasizing the importance of developing young athletes both as players and as individuals.

This season, his work with the Menores squad has already produced results, with Barrio Parque winning the Córdoba championship and subsequently achieving success at regional level.

A promising season at 14

Musumeci’s numbers and achievements are attracting attention: two championships in the same season, leading scorer for his club and a place in the Córdoba provincial selection process.

However, his development is still at an early stage. At 14, the young player has several years of training and competition ahead of him, with the next challenge potentially coming in San Juan in September.

For now, Musumeci continues to train with the number 60 on his back, building experience with Barrio Parque and pursuing his ambition of representing Córdoba and eventually Argentina. His 2026 campaign has already established him as one of the young handball players to watch in Córdoba, while the next stage of his journey could provide an opportunity to test himself against some of Argentina’s strongest youth talent.
