Equatorial Guinea: Emilio Nsue is now eligible, but the lost points are still in limbo

In an unexpected but positive turn for Equatorial Guinean football, FIFA has declared Emilio Nsue López, captain of the Nzalang Nacional, the national team of Equatorial Guinea, eligible to play. This decision, confirmed on March 5 by FIFA’s Players’ Status Chamber, ends years of uncertainty and a complex legal battle initiated by the Equatorial Guinean Football Federation (FEGUIFUT).

The president of FEGUIFUT, Venancio Tomás Ndong Michá, along with the lawyer and spokesperson of Equatorial Guinean football, Cristian Joaquín Ngua, provided details about this legal victory in a press conference held on March 5. Ndong Michá stated, “Since I took office on May 15, we have worked to restore the credibility of the institution and resolve Emilio’s case. Today we can announce that his eligibility is a reality”.

The process included the intervention of an external lawyer and a strategy of changing associations, allowing Nsue to meet the requirements set by FIFA. However, the Federation continues to fight for the reinstatement of the points that Equatorial Guinea lost due to the sanction. Cristian Joaquín explained, “The ruling does not automatically mean the recovery of the points, but we are still fighting before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)”.

Despite this progress, Nsue’s return to the national team will depend on the decision of the coaching staff. “We have done our part in securing his eligibility, now the call-up is in the hands of the coach”, added the president of FEGUIFUT. This result opens new possibilities for the Nzalang Nacional, which still dreams of qualifying for the next World Cup. The ruling in favor of Emilio Nsue strengthens optimism in Equatorial Guinean football and rekindles the hopes of the fans.

On his social media, Emilio Nsue shared his emotion and gratitude for the decision: “After a long wait and many obstacles, I can finally say that I am eligible to play with my national team. Thank you to everyone who supported me during this process. Let’s go Nzalang!” read one of his posts.

The news has been met with enthusiasm by football fans in Equatorial Guinea, who are eager to see their captain leading the team in international competitions once again.
