The elections for the presidency of the Equatorial Guinea Olympic Committee (COGE) will mark a turning point for the country’s sports development. The elections are scheduled for March 2, and so far, three candidates have confirmed their bid to lead the organization for the 2025-2028 Olympic cycle: Alejandro Martín Owono Evuna, Gabriel Mbaga Nchama, and Zibhino Rodríguez Ango.

Alejandro Martín Owono Evuna, the current president of COGE, is seeking re-election with the backing of several sports federations. His vision focuses on transparency and effective governance, with an emphasis on the professionalization of the committee. His plan aims to provide greater support to federations and athletes, with the goal of increasing Equatorial Guinea’s competitiveness on the international stage.

Equatorial Guinea: Owono, the hope of Alavés in challenging times

Gabriel Mbaga Nchama, former president of the Equatorial Guinea Basketball Federation (FEGUIBASKET) and current member of the Karate Federation (FEGUIKARATE), officially announced his candidacy on February 7, 2025. With the support of various sports figures, Mbaga Nchama advocates for more efficient management to ensure greater resources for sports disciplines in the country. His experience in the business sector is seen as a strategic advantage to strengthen financial support for sports programs.

Zibhino Rodríguez Ango, president of the Equatorial Guinea Badminton Federation, is pushing for a renewal of the committee. With notable participation in international forums, such as the Congress of the Association of Olympic Committees of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (ACOLOP), his plan focuses on promoting emerging disciplines and expanding the country’s sports landscape. His proposal seeks to diversify opportunities for Equatorial Guinean athletes and enhance the country’s representation in global competitions.

As the election date approaches, the process is generating significant anticipation within the sports community. The new leadership of COGE will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Olympic sports in Equatorial Guinea, with the challenge of strengthening institutional structures and elevating national talent on the international stage.
