The 2026 FIFA World Cup continued to deliver unforgettable drama on Monday as Morocco, Brazil, and Paraguay secured their places in the Round of 16 following three thrilling Round of 32 encounters that showcased the unpredictability of football’s biggest stage.

Morocco produced one of the tournament’s most memorable performances, eliminating the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shootout after a fiercely contested 1-1 draw at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey. The Atlas Lions prevailed 3-2 on penalties, sending the Dutch home in their earliest World Cup exit in decades.

The Netherlands appeared destined for qualification when Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute. However, Morocco refused to surrender, with Issa Diop rising highest in stoppage time to head home Chemsdine Talbi’s cross in the 91st minute, forcing extra time and keeping Moroccan hopes alive.

Neither side managed to find a breakthrough during the additional 30 minutes, setting the stage for a tense penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou once again proved to be Morocco’s hero, producing a decisive save from Crysencio Summerville before Ismael Saibari calmly converted the winning penalty to spark jubilant celebrations among Moroccan supporters.

The victory continues Morocco’s remarkable rise on the global football stage following its historic semifinal appearance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The Atlas Lions will now face Canada in the Round of 16 as they seek to continue another memorable tournament run.

Earlier in the day, Paraguay delivered arguably the biggest shock of the tournament by eliminating four-time world champions Germany after a gripping 4-3 penalty shootout victory following a 1-1 draw.

Defender José Canale scored the decisive penalty after German defender Jonathan Tah blasted his effort over the crossbar during sudden death, while goalkeeper Orlando Gill made two crucial saves to complete one of Paraguay’s greatest football achievements.

Ranked 41st in the FIFA World Rankings before the tournament, Paraguay entered the match as heavy underdogs against a German side ranked 10th in the world. Yet the South Americans displayed remarkable resilience, discipline, and composure under pressure to secure a famous victory.

The result sparked scenes of celebration across Paraguay, with thousands of supporters flooding the streets of Asunción waving national flags, singing “Soy Albirrojo,” and celebrating a victory many described as one of the greatest moments in the country’s sporting history.

The triumph was so significant that Paraguayan President Santiago Peña declared a national holiday, describing the team’s achievement as a symbol of national pride and resilience that transcended sport.

Paraguay will now face the winner of France and Sweden in the Round of 16 as they continue an unlikely World Cup campaign that has captured the imagination of football fans worldwide. Meanwhile, five-time world champions Brazil survived a determined challenge from Japan to secure a narrow 2-1 victory in Houston, ending the Samurai Blue’s hopes with a heartbreaking stoppage-time winner.

Japan once again came agonizingly close to recording its first-ever knockout victory at a FIFA World Cup but suffered another painful elimination after leading during the match. The defeat marked the third consecutive World Cup in which Japan held an advantage during the knockout stages but ultimately failed to advance.

Despite the disappointment, Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu praised his players for their progress and insisted the team would continue building toward future tournaments.

“We were not able to achieve our goal this time, but we can aim for the next World Cup or maybe even the one after that,” Moriyasu said. “Brazil is a top-tier team, and we’re definitely approaching that level.”

Brazil’s experience ultimately proved decisive as the South American giants once again demonstrated why they remain among the favorites to lift a record-extending sixth World Cup title.

The opening days of the knockout stage have already produced several major surprises, including Canada’s victory over South Africa and Paraguay’s stunning elimination of Germany. Morocco’s victory over the Netherlands further reinforced the growing competitiveness of African football on the world stage.

With several heavyweight clashes still to come, including France against Sweden, England facing DR Congo, Belgium meeting Senegal, and Argentina preparing to take on Cape Verde, the race toward the quarterfinals promises even more excitement as the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup enters its decisive phase.
