French football legend Zinedine Zidane has officially taken over as France's national team coach, succeeding Didier Deschamps and beginning a new era with his first challenge in the UEFA Nations League.

France has officially appointed football icon Zinedine Zidane as the new head coach of the men’s national team, ushering in a new chapter for one of the world’s most successful football nations. The former World Cup winner succeeds Didier Deschamps, who stepped down after guiding Les Bleus through more than a decade of remarkable achievements.

Zidane’s appointment follows years of speculation linking him with the role. During that period, the French football legend reportedly turned down numerous offers from leading European clubs, choosing instead to wait for the opportunity to coach his national team.

Speaking during his official presentation, Zidane described the position as a lifelong dream and pledged to dedicate himself fully to helping France remain among the world’s elite football nations.

“My dream has always been to coach the French national team. I have waited for this opportunity for years, and now I will give everything I have to help this team continue winning,” Zidane said.

The 54-year-old takes over a squad filled with world-class talent and high expectations. His first competitive challenge will come in the UEFA Nations League, where France will open its campaign away to Turkey before hosting Italy in what will be his first home match as national team coach.

The fixture against Italy carries symbolic significance. It will be Zidane’s first match on French soil as coach against the same nation he faced in the final appearance of his legendary playing career during the 2006 FIFA World Cup final.

Widely regarded as one of France’s greatest footballers, Zidane inspired his country to victory at the 1998 FIFA World Cup on home soil before leading the team to the UEFA European Championship title in 2000. His success continued at club level as manager of Real Madrid, where he won multiple UEFA Champions League trophies and established himself as one of the game’s most accomplished coaches.

The French Football Federation confirmed Zidane’s appointment following France’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, expressing confidence that his experience, leadership and winning mentality will guide the national team into a new era.

With a talented generation of players at his disposal, Zidane now faces the challenge of transforming potential into silverware as France prepares for upcoming international competitions. Supporters will be hoping the former captain can once again lead Les Bleus to glory this time from the sidelines.
