Gabon is moving closer to a major step in the development of its digital infrastructure as the government prepares to establish a public-private partnership between the Société de Patrimoine des Infrastructures Numériques (SPIN) and Gabon Fiber.

Review and validation workshops held in Libreville on September 9 and 10 brought government administrations, authorities and technical experts together to examine the proposed partnership agreement and its supporting annexes. The discussions focused on incorporating recommendations and completing the contractual framework ahead of implementation.

The planned national backbone covers approximately 3,420 kilometres of network infrastructure, including 1,769 kilometres of existing infrastructure and an additional 1,651 kilometres of planned extensions.

The scale of the project reflects Gabon’s ambition to strengthen the infrastructure supporting electronic communications across the country. By combining existing networks with planned extensions, the initiative is designed to provide a stronger foundation for connectivity and future digital services.

Participants also examined investment commitments, the resumption of network operations, local value creation, network sovereignty and the financial structure of the partnership. Government oversight of the strategic infrastructure was another important element of the discussions.

The partnership between SPIN and Gabon Fiber is scheduled to be signed on September 14, 2026, in the presence of the Minister of Digital Economy, marking the transition from the review and validation stage toward implementation.

For Gabon, strengthening the national backbone represents an important investment in the country’s digital future. Reliable backbone infrastructure can support the expansion of communications services while creating a stronger platform for digital businesses, public services and wider access to the digital economy.

The government expects the initiative to contribute to the continued operation, modernisation and expansion of the national backbone, while reinforcing Gabon’s capacity to manage strategic digital infrastructure.

With the proposed partnership moving toward implementation, Gabon is positioning digital connectivity as an important pillar of its broader development agenda, with the 3,420-kilometre network providing a foundation for a more connected and digitally enabled economy.
