Safaricom in partnership with Huawei, has introduced Kenya’s first fibre-to-the-room (FTTR) internet solution, a move that marks a significant shift in home connectivity and sets a new benchmark for digital living.
As households rely on an increasing number of connected devices and high-bandwidth applications, traditional broadband systems are struggling to keep pace. The new FTTR solution addresses this challenge by extending fibre connectivity into every room, delivering uninterrupted, high-speed and low-latency internet throughout the home.

Unlike conventional fibre-to-the-home systems, which depend on a single router to distribute Wi-Fi, FTTR transforms the entire home into a fibre-powered network. Each room is equipped with an optical access point, ensuring consistent speeds, minimal latency and seamless coverage without dead zones.
“Today’s homes demand more than just connectivity; they require an always-on digital ecosystem,” said Peter Ndegwa, chief executive of Safaricom. “Through our partnership with Huawei, we are delivering a fully immersive connected home experience that meets the evolving needs of modern households.”
The system is designed to support data-intensive activities such as ultra-high-definition streaming, including 4K and 8K content, online gaming, and augmented and virtual reality applications. It also supports remote work, video conferencing, smart home devices and cloud-based services.
Safaricom said the service includes whole-home coverage with consistent gigabit speeds, ultra-low latency suited for real-time applications, and artificial intelligence-powered network optimization that adjusts performance automatically. The infrastructure is designed to integrate with smart home technologies, offering a more reliable and seamless user experience.
The launch positions Safaricom as the first provider in Kenya to offer an end-to-end fibre connectivity solution within the home, reinforcing its role in next-generation broadband and digital services. By eliminating the limitations of traditional Wi-Fi systems, FTTR aims to provide a consistent, high-performance connection across all areas of the home.
The partnership combines Safaricom’s fibre network and market reach with Huawei’s FTTR technology, including advanced optical terminals, Wi-Fi 6 and AI-driven network management. Industry observers say the rollout could accelerate the adoption of smart homes in Kenya, laying the groundwork for innovations in home automation, energy management, security and digital entertainment.
