Kenya is strengthening its preparations for the anticipated El Niño rains expected between October and December, with the government assuring students, teachers and parents that measures are being put in place to keep schools operating safely and minimise disruption to learning and national examinations.

Principal Secretary for the State Department for Basic Education John Ololtuaa joined Government Spokesperson Charles Owino and other senior officials at a press briefing to update the public on the government’s El Niño Preparedness and Response Plan.
The Ministry of Education, working through the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), has activated an Emergency Response Plan focused on ensuring that examinations can proceed smoothly during the rainy season.
As part of the preparations, authorities are mapping schools and examination centres across all counties to identify potential risks and ensure examination materials are safely secured and strategically positioned ahead of the rains.
The government is also preparing to maintain school feeding programmes, with supplies being organised in advance to ensure that learners continue receiving support even in areas affected by challenging weather conditions.
According to the Ministry, additional mitigation measures are being prepared for communities and schools that could experience the greatest impact from the anticipated rains. The approach is intended to allow authorities to respond quickly if conditions affect access to schools or other essential services.
The preparations highlight Kenya’s focus on protecting education continuity during periods of severe weather. By planning ahead, the government aims to reduce disruptions and provide students, teachers and families with greater confidence as the rainy season approaches.
The Ministry of Education said it remains committed to ensuring that learning and examinations continue safely and with minimal disruption, while working with other government departments as part of the country’s wider preparedness and response efforts.
