A Chinese-developed laser mosquito-control device has entered mass production, with the first batch of units expected to ship later this month, according to an update from its developer, Photon Matrix Lab, on crowdfunding platform Indiegogo.
The portable device combines LiDAR, millimeter-wave radar, AI-powered vision and a precision laser to detect and target mosquitoes and other small flying insects, according to the company.Photon Matrix said mass production began in August and that it has opened an official online store offering infrared and blue-laser versions of the device.
The launch comes as China’s mosquito-control industry continues to expand. According to Xinhua, Jinhua in Zhejiang Province exported more than 45 million yuan, about $6.7 million, worth of mosquito-repellent products during the first half of 2025, representing a 65.1 percent year-on-year increase.
Industry estimates cited by Xinhua indicate that China’s mosquito-control market could grow from 7.86 billion yuan in 2025 to 12.43 billion yuan by 2030.
The demand is also driving experimentation with automated mosquito-control technologies. During the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, an automated mosquito trapper was deployed in the Asian Games Village. The system attracted mosquitoes by mimicking human body temperature and breathing before trapping or eliminating them.
Other smart mosquito-control robots used during the Games reportedly relied on carbon dioxide and ultraviolet light to attract mosquitoes.
These developments reflect a broader shift toward applying sensors, artificial intelligence, computer vision, robotics and automated systems to an age-old problem traditionally addressed through chemicals, light-based products and physical traps.
Similar technology is also emerging in other countries. Israeli company Bzigo has developed the Bzigo Iris, which uses computer vision and infrared sensing to detect mosquitoes and mark their locations with a low-intensity laser. Unlike the Photon Matrix system, the Bzigo Iris does not kill the mosquito but helps users locate it.
Photon Matrix is taking a different approach by using a laser as the final stage to physically eliminate detected targets.
The technology nevertheless faces questions over its real-world performance and safety. The company’s advertised performance figures have not yet been fully verified through independent testing, while Photon Matrix has said it will release additional testing and safety information.
For consumers, effectiveness, safety, reliability and price are likely to determine whether laser-based mosquito-control systems can move beyond niche applications and become widely adopted.
Photon Matrix’s move into mass production marks another step in the development of technology-driven mosquito control, adding an automated alternative to the conventional products already used in homes and outdoor spaces.
