Africa’s priorities in peace, security and sustainable development took centre stage in New York as leaders of the African Union, European Union and United Nations met during the 81st United Nations General Assembly to discuss areas for stronger cooperation.

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf joined UN Secretary-General António Guterres, European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for a high-level trilateral engagement on the margins of UNGA81. The meeting highlighted the importance of stronger multilateral cooperation and collective action in addressing shared challenges.
Peace and security were among the key areas of discussion, with particular attention to the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea and maritime security. The leaders also discussed efforts to prevent further escalation of conflicts while strengthening regional dialogue, mediation and cooperation.

In a separate AU-UN meeting held in New York the same day, the African Union and United Nations emphasized preventive diplomacy, mediation and the importance of providing adequate resources for African-led approaches to peace and security challenges.
Food security and climate resilience were also central to the wider discussions surrounding Africa’s development needs. Cooperation in areas such as agricultural production, resilient food systems and responses to climate-related pressures remains closely linked to the continent’s long-term development ambitions.
Technology is another area offering opportunities for deeper cooperation. The use of satellite systems and Earth-observation capabilities can support early-warning systems, environmental monitoring, agricultural planning and disaster preparedness, giving African institutions additional tools to anticipate and respond to emerging risks.
The trilateral meeting reflects a broader effort to translate international cooperation into practical outcomes for Africa and its partners. The African Union, European Union and United Nations have continued to emphasize the importance of coordinated action on peace, security and sustainable development.
